Robert “Bobby” Bell, a retired British racing driver and motor racing expert, as well as a VR subscriber, has been killed when the shotgun he was cleaning accidentally discharged. The accident occurred in the 16th century farmhouse in Surrey that he shared with his wife Aline. He was 72.
Bell, who once described the secret to his success as “hard graft,”
initially sold Jaguars for John Coombs before opening his own Lotus dealership, Bell & Colvill, in 1970 in partnership with Martin Colvill. They didn’t just sell the cars, but would also modify selected examples for customers, including offering a turbocharged version of the Lotus Esprit before the factory did. To Mrs. Bell and the other surviving family members, Vintage Racecar extends its deepest sympathies.
