Although all paintings are unique, periodically an artist is given the opportunity to work on a special project. When the owner of this 1960 Maserati Tipo 60 consulted with me about creating a paint- ing of his car, I knew this was just such an occasion. The piece we discussed was to become more than just the car itself in peaceful repose.
We decided to build a narrative into the painting based upon this car’s past. According to the owner, the number 5 Tipo 60 did, in fact, race in the historic events at Sebring in the late ’70s, and was driven by none other than Sir Stirling Moss. The owner also wanted the painting to include several of the significant cars with which it raced in its heyday. Thus, the Tipo 60 is seen here being haunted by a ’61 Ferrari TRC, ’58 Lister Jaguar, ’60 Lotus 19 Monte Carlo, and ’59 Porsche RSK as it makes its way into Turn 1.
