Starting with the Winter Marathon Rally in January and ending with the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run, Sports Car Digest covered a diverse range of historic car races and rallies in 2018. Our award-winning team of photographers took tens of thousands of pictures, spending hours post-event analyzing and choosing the best ones in an effort to wow our readers. To celebrate the effect that these photographs have on us as well as the dozens of talented photographers who capture them, we have once again narrowed it down to the 50 best vintage racing pictures of the year.
Identifying the top 50 certainly wasn’t a walk in the park, as the shots worthy of high praise number not in the dozens but in the many hundreds. The list is done, however, and similar to our Best of 2009, Best of 2010, Best of 2011, Best of 2012, Best of 2013, Best of 2014, Best of 2015, Best of 2016 and Best of 2017 contests, we are asking for your assistance picking the best vintage car racing photo from 2018.

1/30/18 Update: Readers chose Victor Varela’s outstanding capture of Peter Giddings drifting his Alfa Romeo Monza as our best vintage car racing photo of 2018.
After a battle with cancer, Giddings crossed the finish line for the final time in early January. The ever-gracious gentleman racer has long been a fan favorite at vintage events around the globe. As Victor’s photo expertly illustrates, Giddings shared his fantastic collection of pre- and post-war race cars in the best way — driving them as they were meant to be driven. The second favorite image of 2018 as chosen by readers was Gerard Brown’s timely photo of the 1926 Bentley getting wet on the Flying Scotsman, followed by Pierpaolo Romano’s photo of the crossed-up Triumph at the Winter Marathon Rally.

1# Tyrrel 06. Great palette of color and speed. Spot on depth of field. The driver looking toward next apex, brilliant. Sir Jackie at the wheel – irrelevant, but cool. #2. 1934 Talbot. Great composition and color. Good sense of speed and racing dynamics. It would have been first, but the fact that no part of the car is in focus was distracting. #3. DB4 at Goodwood. Great composition. Other worldly sense of place. Honorable mention. 356A at Rennsport, Merc C11, NART 512BB.
Hats off to the publishers. Once again a terrific set of photos to chose from. Please keep it up next year.

1939 Frazier Nash on the Flying Scotsman Rally. I love the color and composition, but mostly I feel the image captures the pure joy of being out there. I can feel the cold, the warmth of the sun and the wind in my hair (if I had any!).

I vote for Peter Giddings in his Alfa Monza. I will miss seeing him drive his cars at the limit. He was always a joy to watch and there weren’t many who drove vintage cars as they were driven in their prime.

As most have already mentioned there are many awesome shots. The one that caught my eye was “Golden Hour at the LaMans Classic”. Having been a track rat for 25 years this pic made me think of those times late in the day when I was squeezing in the last few laps. Then maybe a pop or two and a bunch of (exaggerated) stories! Most fun ever!

My favourite would be the three Mini’s at Goodwood. On this side of the pond, we had a good turnout of Minis at Watkins Glen this past year, along with a visit from the hero himself, Paddy Hopkirk.

However my picture choice would combine the best atmosphere and nicest event for vintage motorsport, so it can only be Goodwood!!
The picture of the E-Type and the Ferrari Breadvan from Nick Duncan, to my opnion is best portraying the atmosphere of this brillient event and for me represents the winner of the contest!
The 2nd of choice for me would be “Triumphing at the winter marathon” by Pierpoalo Romano, as this shows the real privateers enthousiast mind set! Loads of entousiasm for little money!

Racing in the rain – 1926 Bentley on the Flying Scotsman rally(my absolute favourite) Alfa in a downpour (Grand Prix of the Golden Age) and the NART Ferrari 512 BBLM – the colour pops out of the background mist.
All the photos are wonderful! For me nothing says “sports car racing” better than the open Red 1956 Speedster roadster at Rennsport.

Tough choice, but my pick: the Bentley in the Flying Scotsman Rally. Captures the conditions, the speed, and the fortitude of the participants.
As usual, SCD has posted many fine images. Tough to choose, but my vote goes to Triumphing at the Winter Marathon. It’s an iconic vintage car (knock-off hubs and all) captured in classic TTO mode and the image is extremely sharp. What lifts it above the other photos in my view is the terrific contrast between BRG car and white snow, plus the rare un-helmeted view of the driver’s face, looking through the turn, his expression showing concentration and engagement and maybe a bit of frostbite. This image shows not just the car but the dialogue between car and driver. Well done!
Hi, My choice is Blue Passion’s photo of the Austin-Healey 3000 Mk III. When I think of having fun driving a car this looks like it.

Just like the others stated before me, they are all magnificent photos. So it is very difficult to pick one. But my favourite would be the picture of the Bentley 3-4 1/2 coming through the water splash at the Flying Scottsman Rallye (by Gerard Brown). It is not my era of cars (60’s – 80’s), but something in this picture stroke a cord in me, like seeing a time machine coming through a curtain of water from an ancient time. 🙂
Fifty winning photographs. So difficult to pick one favourite. May have been possible if all had been on a single page as thumbnails. One photo that I kept going back is the 1965 Cobra 289 on the Tour Auto Rally as I have always been a Cobra fan and the contrast of the car against the rocky cliff is very striking.

My young son and I camped next to him, his wife and their huge dog Havoc at the 2016 Laguna Rolex Reunion.
He was very unassuming and happy to share his love for his fabulous 1933 Alfa.
One early morning he fired it up about 15 feet from our RV and the whole campground rumbled. Of course my son slept through it…

Wow such great photos but one stands out: Triumphing at Winter Marathon by Romano says it all. The ragtop is down the drivers face is in full view with a determined grin as the car is broad sliding left and front wheels are in opposite lock, plus the rear tires kicking up the snow.. What great fun !!
I vote for Peter Giddings in the 1932 Alfa, since vintage Alfas are my all-time favorite sports cars. My second choice is Got Milk with the 1932 Frazer-Nash. It’s hysterical.
Ferrari 512 S ‘Longtail’ at the Imola Classic (photo: Patrick Payany). I was about to vote for a different photo until I came up on this shot on the last page. I hope Mr. Payany did not get run over taking the shot! The fact that the car seems to be bearing down on the photographer is one reason I love the photo. It is also an incredibly clear shot. But the color contrast between the red Ferrari and green background is the frosting on the cake.
My regards to all of the photographers. Really any of the photos could be chosen as the best and I could not argue. And keep up the great work SCM!

They are all fantastic shots, but my vote would have to go with the shot of Peter Giddings working his magic in his beautiful Alfa. That right front tire revealing the commitment and control he always had on the track. He was the epitome of what vintage racing should be all about. Gentlemanly, knowledgable, and always open to questions and conversation. No 54 foot trailers, with crews and catering…he wrenched his own beautiful collection of racers, and then hopped in and drop the wheels off of them. Godspeed…

Many fantastic photos there but for me, it has to be Drew Gibson’s shot of Sir Jackie Stewart in the Tyrrell 006 at Goodwood. Apart from loving that car (I saw 001 at its very first race), Jackie is one of my heroes and this superb shot looks as if it could have been taken back in period. Superb!

If there is a classic photo in the group, it has to be: Sir Jackie Stewart in the Tyrrell 006 at the Goodwood. 1) The car is classic, 2) The driver is classic, 3)The venue is classic, and 4) The photo perspective is classic! The bonus is that while the photo was from this year, it might have been slipped in from those days way back when Sir Jackie was actually running for the win – CLASSIC! I also loved the Triumph in the snow (I’ve done similar with my ’66 Spitfire), it was my #2 choice.

My vote is for the photo of the late Peter Giddings on his 1932 Alfa Romeo Monza at Laguna Seca. Peter raced his valuable vintage cars so we could all see and hear how fantastic they really had been in their time.

I would choose the 1960 Aston Martin DB4 at Goodwood. It captures the essence of racing into the sunset. Beautiful.
There’s not a bad shot in the entire group. That said, if it wasn’t for Peter Giddings passing I’d vote for the water logged Bentley in the Scottish rally. However, It’s Peter in the Maserati for me.
Peter Giddings 1st, Dueling Cobras 2nd, 300SL 3rd. What a shame you used nothing from Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, VIR, Indianapolis or Pittsburgh. All with great scenery and heaps of great cars. Yes, Goodwood is wonderful but let’s get some glimpses of other places

An astonishing array of spectacular photos this year , making it well nigh impossible to choose one above all the others:
If push comes to shove I think I would plump for Jochen Mass fighting the black behemoth ,the Merc SSK, in the wet at Goodwood .

Given that it is -20C here (Ottawa, ON) today with wind-chill of -32C, my vote goes for “Triumphing at the Winter Marathon (photo: Pierpaolo Romano)”. It is a great shot of a hardy individual and a car with attitude in an uphill drift. The BRG contrasting with the white snow gives a real sense of focus. Well done!
Many great photos, must be a nightmare choosing one. I liked the Triumph, the blue XKE, and others, but I select the 1926 Bentley
I vote for the Morris Cooper S. Mini Cooper S were giant killers on the track and rally while being competitive in club racing for decades and how many racers/builders/owners owned them personally. They were aspired and accessible to and by all.
Triumphing does it for me. An every day bloke taking out his TR 3 in a rallye evokes how sports car events started. Nothing fancy or expensive, just taking on a challenge and having great fun! The picture captures it all!

“Triumphing at the Winter Marathon” is not only a spectacular photo, but is totally unlike any previous winner. However – no helmet in an open car with no cage?
Can’t agree more with John Roswell – “Triumphing at the Winter Marathon” is a spectacular photo – made more so by the hemetless driver
So many great shots! I had a hard time separating the “great photos” from the “great _motorsports_” photos, but I think the winner should show cars and drivers clearly in competition rather than just on their own in scenic locations (TR3 in the snow, Itala, Volvo). So my pick is the ’55 Maserati drag racing the ’54 HWM at Goodwood; you can hear it, smell it, _feel_ it! Second favorite is the dueling Cobras at Spa: true take-no-prisoners forceful driving!
My choice is the 62 E Type on the Tour Auto Rally – still the best looking sports car ever, very clever. clean simple yet beautiful lines which will never date,
