In a move that caught the auction world by surprise, Christie’s announced the postponement of its much-publicized sale of a 1939 Auto Union, just a week before the car was to cross the block at Retromobile. The venerable auction house released only the briefest of statements which read “Christie’s today announced that it will postpone the sale of the 1939 Auto Union–Grand Prix V12 Type D racecar from the February Retromobile sale in Paris pending further exploration into the car’s race history, in collaboration with Audi Tradition.” No further details were available at the time VR went to press.
