A 1968 Porsche 907 LH will be featured at the 2014 Gooding and Company Amelia Island Auction, scheduled for Friday, March 7th at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation in Florida. The 907 Langheck (LH) or Longtail version, chassis 005, is one of only seven Longtails built for the 1968 racing season. Finished in white Porsche livery, and one of only two extant, the prototype Porsche is estimated to sell for $3,500,000 – $5,000,000.
Chassis 005 was overall winner at the 1968 running of the 24 Hours of Daytona driven by Vic Elford and Jochen Neerpasch, as part of the Works Team’s 1-2-3 finish and representing the first time a Porsche won a 24-hour race. The Langheck was a five-time entrant at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, winning its class at the 1971 race at the hands of Walter Brun and Petter Mattli.
Most recently this 907 LH has been restored to 1968 Daytona configuration and fitted with a correct eight-cylinder engine. The 907 competed in the Daytona 50th anniversary celebration in 2012 and was voted Most Historically Important Race Car on the field at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 2011.
The 2014 Gooding and Company Amelia Island Auction will be staged on Friday, March 7th, at 11 a.m., at the Racquet Park located at the Omni Amelia Island Plantation at 6800 First Coast Highway in Amelia Island, one mile south of the Amelia Island Parkway. Guests may preview the cars on Thursday, March 6th from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday, March 7th from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. An auction catalog for $75 admits two to the viewing and auction. General admission to the viewing and auction can be purchased at the tent for $30 per person.
