1933 Chrysler CL Imperial Convertible Roadster sold for $704,000

The RM Auctions Hershey 2013 sale was held October 10–11 in Hershey, Pennsylvania, resulting in $9.6 million in total sales and 90% of all lots sold at the auction held during the AACA Eastern Regional Fall Meet.
The two-day auction featured a selection of 115 vehicles, with a focus on Brass and Classic Era motor cars. This year’s sale drew a standing-room-only crowd, with bidders representing 17 countries from around the world. The top result at the 2013 RM Hershey auction went to the 1933 Chrysler CL Imperial Convertible Roadster, one of nine built and one of six known to survive, that sold for $704,000, closely followed by the 1910 Pierce-Arrow 48-SS Seven-Passenger Touring, offered from single-family ownership since 1950, that made $687,500.
“We’re thrilled with the results from this year’s Hershey sale,” says Gord Duff, Car Specialist, RM Auctions. “Since its launch in 2007, our Hershey sale has enjoyed strong support from the collector community. This year’s event was no exception, with high levels of client interest resulting in numerous lots exceeding expectations. The results not only reflect the quality of the product on offer, but also the global reach of RM’s marketing campaigns and the company’s ability to match product to venue.”
Another highlight of the sale was the presentation of 14 automobiles from the estate of Jim Miller. Headlined by a 1947 Ford Super DeLuxe Sportsman, the collection achieved a total $1,265,000, with numerous lots exceeding expectations. Among those surpassing pre-sale estimates were a 1934 Packard Eight Phaeton, for $132,000; a 1950 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible, for $126,500; and a 1955 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria and 1970 Oldsmobile 442, which sold for $88,000 each.
Beyond the automobiles, a restored, award-winning 1932 Gar Wood 28′ Triple Cockpit Runabout “Hornet” also sold well. As one of only seven produced in 1932, the “Hornet” was contested by bidders in the room and on the phones, eventually selling for $396,000, against a pre-sale estimate of $280,000–$340,000.
RM Auctions offered 115 vehicles for sale, with 104 finding a new owner, reflecting a 90.43% sell-through rate. The total sales volume was $9,697,600, inclusive of buyer’s premiums, and the average price per vehicle sold was $93,246. In 2012, RM Auctions offered 118 vehicles for sale, with 110 finding a new owner, reflecting a 93.2% sell-through rate. The total sales volume was $9,901,100, inclusive of buyer’s premiums, and the average price per vehicle sold was $90,010.
