20th Goodwood Revival Recap

Avatar photoVR Staff

Last weekend’s 20th annual Goodwood Revival once again celebrated motor racing history with its usual full slate of races despite weather conditions ranging from sunshine to heavy rain. While the list of race winners for the September 8-10 meeting can be found below, we will attempt to recap a few of the weekend’s more significant happenings.

Among them was the 60th anniversary of the Ecurie Ecosse team’s victory in the 1957 24 Hours of Le Mans, with a collection of Jaguar C-and D-Types running demonstrations in tribute to the little Scottish team that challenged and defeated the rest of the world. Three-time Formula One World Champion Jackie Stewart, who raced for the team during the early stages of his career, drove the 1957 Le Mans-winning D-Type. Stewart also lapped the circuit in the 1957 Maserati 250F with which Juan Manuel Fangio won the 1957 German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring, providing another excellent throwback thrill for the assembled crowd.

In the RAC Tourist Trophy Celebration race, Michael Gans and Andy Wolfe emerged victorious with their AC Cobra after the outcome had looked to be settled in favor of either the Jaguar E-Type pairing of Chris Ward and Gordon Shedden or the Family Cobra of David and Oliver Hart, but those cars hit trouble of the regulatory and mechanical variety, respectively, leaving Gans and Wolfe clear for the win. Ward and Shedden recovered from their 30-second penalty to claim 2nd, with the Cobra of Nicolas Minassian and Ludovic Caron taking 3rd. Young Oliver Hart (#1 above, Roger Dixon photo) was, however, selected as Rolex Driver of the Meeting for his stirring drive prior to his car catching fire.

Rob Hall brought Martin Melling’s Aston Martin to victory in the Freddie March Memorial Trophy race after early leader Chris Ward was given a five-second penalty for clipping the chicane with his Ford GT40. Ward did prevail, however, in the Whitsun Trophy race with his GT40, while in the Richmond Trophy contest, Tecnica Mechanica Maserati driver Tony Wood fought off the challenge of Scarab-mounted Julian Bronson to win by less than a second.

Michael Gans doubled up with victory in the Goodwood Trophy race driving his 1935 ERA R1B, while Martin Stretton claimed the Glover Trophy with his Lotus 24-BRM. In the soggy Kinara Trophy race, Philip Keen and Jon Minshaw prevailed with their Jaguar E-Type, chased home by the similar car of Tom Kristensen and Gregor Fisken.

The St. Mary’s Trophy race was run in two heats and scored on aggregate, with Jason Plato and Nick Naismith taking top honors with their 1955 Austin A35 Westminster, ahead of the ’59 Alfa Romeo Giulietta T of Steve Soper and Richard Meaden, with Anthony Reid and Justin Law close behind in 3rd with the Don Law Racing Jaguar MkI.
