Myron Vernis has a problem. Oh, he seems normal enough at first blush…terrific career, amazing wife, two wonderful loving daughters. But trust me…he’s got major issues. As a physician I fix the bones, not what resides above the clavicles, so I may be stretching out of field a bit on this one. But honestly, you really don’t need to be a psychiatrist or even a doctor for that matter to diagnose Vernis’ insidious malady. Of what am I speaking? Vehiculomania, and in Vernis’ tragic case, hopelessly incurable.
By his own account, Vernis has owned nearly 400 automobiles, however there’s no telling how much he’s shaving from the true number. Some recent arm-twisting has uncovered that Vernis has owned no less than six Matra D’Jets, eight NSU Wankel Spyders, three Powell trucks, three Porsche 597 Jagdwagens (they only built 71), more than 100 356s, six Deutsch Bonnet HBR-5s and 30 Porsche Diesel Tractors (not a misprint!). His collection has also included a vast array of exotic European and American one-offs, rare pre- and postwar coachbuilts, unloved orphans and yes, a herd of fright-pigs too numerous to count.
