In 1945, the Swedish aircraft manufacturer Saab AB, began design work on a prototype road car with the intention that it be low cost, incorporate monocoque construction and have half the drag of its competition from Volkswagen, Opel and DKW. Initially penned by Saab’s head of design Bror Bjurströmer, project 92001 came to be known as the Ursaab, or proto-saab, and laid the groundwork for Saab’s first production offering, the 92, in 1949.
