HMSA Spring Club Event 2011 – Report and Photo Gallery

Report and photos by Dennis Gray
The Historic Motor Sports Association (HMSA) held its Spring Club Event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on March 19-20, 2011.
HMSA events feature historic production cars built through 1966 and purpose-built Formula, Sports Racing and IMSA cars built through 1984. The March club event featured more than 50 vintage race cars circling the 11-turn, 2.238-mile Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca road course in Monterey, California. The race weekend and the car count was hampered by poor weather, with dreary, overcast skies on Saturday and heavy rain on Sunday.
In addition to the “Cars of Interest” below, the field included many notable cars: Thor Johnson’s Porsche 910; the Maserati 200Si of Ned Spieker; Brent Backman’s 1957 Lister Jaguar; Peter Read’s Lola T294; 1954 Huffaker Special of Lou Pavesi, plus pairs of nicely turned out (and dry) Gullwings and Shelby GT350s.

Morgan 4/4 - Tom Morgan
Tom Morgan, #3 1956 Morgan 4/4 - Tom acquired a red 1959 MG A roadster in 1983 and campaigned it as a vintage race car for over 20 years, developing it from a street-legal production car to a full-race competitor while keeping true to vintage racing’s spirit and authenticity. In early 2000, Tom got a call from one of his ‘fans’ in the Morgan Owners Group telling him about a ‘vintage-race-ready’ 1956 Morgan 4/4 for sale by the widow of the previous owner. 'I've got to buy it,' he told his wife Beverly, 'It has my name on it.' Tom took some time to get the Morgan ready for competition, but he's been driving the right-hand roadster in vintage race events for several years. At the 2009 Wine Country Classic featuring Morgan as the honored marque (celebrating 100 years of the Morgan Car Company), Tom led the all-Morgan race for several laps and wife Beverly drove the race car in the all-Morgan parade at lunchtime. Tom is the driver and mechanic for his vintage race car, while wife Beverly is his pit boss. Beverly has also performed the National Anthem over 200 times at events.
