In addition to the event’s tribute to Dan Gurney, attendees at August’s Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion will be able to enjoy a double dose of Trans-Am glory as well, since the weekend will feature both the muscular 5-liter sedans and the nimble machines from the Under-2-Liter class that enlivened the early years of the fabled series.
The SCCA’s Trans-American Sedan Championship first raced at Laguna Seca in 1969, when Mark Donohue drove Roger Penske’s Sunoco Camaro to victory, while in 1970 Laguna’s race served as the season opener, won by Parnelli Jones in a Bud Moore Mustang. That same weekend 40 years ago, the Under-2-Liter cars also opened their season at Laguna Seca, with a race from which Alfa Romeo driver Lee Midgley emerged victorious.
Those three winning cars and many more—including a pair of Dan Gurney’s AAR Barracudas and John Morton in Pete Brock’s double championship-winning BRE Datsun 510—should be in the fields when the two Trans-Am Groups run during the Reunion weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
