The Sportscar Vintage Racing Association (SVRA) has announced an “Indy Legends Pro-Am” race that will feature as many as 25 former Indianapolis 500 drivers, as a special feature of its June 6–8 Indy Historics vintage race weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The Legends Pro-Am will be a 40-minute race of American muscle cars on the Speedway’s 2.43-mile Grand Prix road course Sunday, June 8, with initial entries received from Al Unser Jr., Lyn St. James, Willy T. Ribbs and Mark Dismore. Unser won the 1992 and ’94 500s, St. James was 1992 Rookie of the Year and Ribbs was the first African-American to qualify for the race, while Dismore came back from a devastating injuries suffered during a 1991 accident at the track and nearly won the race 10 years later before gearbox failure dashed his hopes.
