Report and photos by Dennis Gray
I shared a secret with Sports Car Digest readers a few years ago that is worth repeating. For years the best-kept secret about the Monterey Motorsports Reunion was the weekend before. Known as the Pre-Reunion, only drivers, owners and very few of us press types attend, allowing unfettered access to the cars, drivers, owners and team members. While the joke is out on the actual races, the Set-Up Day on Friday is my new secret. Don’t tell anyone.
On Friday, I was able to walk around and photograph a Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa without one spectator stepping between lens and the car. This is impossible the weekend of the big event. The same can be said for the ERA Type B, Aston Martin DBR2, Alfa Romeo Tipo B P3, Maserati 450S and a host of other special entrants.
Tomorrow all the cars hit the track at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the Monterey Motorsports Pre-Reunion and it should be a good show. We’ll be there at every turn, so stay tuned for much more from Monterey over the coming days and weeks.

The last shot of the 1931 Alfa Romeo Tipo P3 was the most stunning! I don’t know if you Photoshopped or LightRoomed that one, Sir, but it is masterly. Wow! Thank you so much. I feel as if I were “there”, all the while I am “here” in my chair in Costa Rica.
Stephen.
Boy do you have great taste in images. This image is shot under a heavy overcast. Just a small touch Photo Shop level control towards darker mid tones. Nikon D800, ISO 200, 50mm, f.3.5 at 1/200 second hand held. Some day I hope to spend a couple of weeks photograping the birds of Costa Rica.
What a sensational set of pictures! You have managed to capture the atmosphere and pending excitement in every shot. If I have one small criticism about SCD it is that some of the pictures of events can be a little repetitive, but I agree with the other Stephen, you have made us feel like we are there.
