It has been 70 years since Bentley started the production of the R-Type Continental. The first Bentley to carry the Continental name, and one of the most celebrated cars in the marque’s 103-year history. Only 208 units of the Continental were produced; so even in the 1950s, it was pretty special if you spot an R-Type Continental on the road.
It became known as the benchmark Bentley and eventually became the DNA for Bentley’s grand touring. The first Continental GT in 2003 took inspiration from the original for its ethos and design and it has since been a source of inspiration for Bentley Design teams.
