The Quail Motorsports Gathering 2013 was held Friday, August 16th at the Quail Lodge Golf Club in Carmel, California. Under sunny and warm conditions, the 11th annual “Quail” celebrated sports and racing automobiles and motorcycles, while participants and guests enjoyed wonderful food, drink and camaraderie among like-minded enthusiasts.
The 2013 Quail Motorsports Gathering honored 100 years of Aston Martin and featured a Retrospective of Automobili Lamborghini Celebrating 50 Years, as well as a Tribute to the California Mille in Honor of Martin Swig and Peter Brock Designs. An impressive display of more than 175 vehicles were on display on the fairways of the Quail Lodge Golf Club.
This year’s Quail also had classes for The Great Ferraris, Pre- and Post War Sports, Pre- and Post War Racing, Super Cars and Sports and Racing Motorcycles. Notable entrants included a 1958 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa; 1961 Aston Martin DB4GT Zagato; 1928 Bugatti Type 35B; 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Touring Corto Spider; 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe; ‘Jabbeke’ Jaguar XK120 Land Speed Record; 1953 Aston Martin DB3S/2; 1967 Alfa Romeo GTA Prototipo 1600 Corsa, ex-Works; 1967 Alfa Romeo TZ2; 1950 Ferrari 166 Touring Berlinetta; 1952 Porsche America Roadster; 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder; 1967 Ford GT40 MkIV; 1931 Bugatti Type 51 Grand Prix and 1956 Jaguar XKSS.
Additional automobiles on exhibit included Chevrolet Corvette race cars from at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, which made their presence quite clear as they drove via police escort to the Quail Lodge Golf Club from the nearby Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The parade of Corvettes was led by Jay Leno and GM Global Design Head Ed Welburn.
Judging at the Quail Motorsports Gathering is different than traditional Concours because each car is judged by the other collectors competing in the same class. Only one car per class is honored with Best in Class, while they all compete for the Best of Show Award. This award, given at the Rolex Circle of Champions Awards Ceremony, called on all entrants to vote on the vehicle that achieved what they believe to be the best representation of historic excellence. All cars must be fully operational to compete and class winners are placed in the Rolex Circle of Champions for viewing once announced.
The Rolex Best of Show at the 2013 Quail Motorsports Gathering was awarded to the 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe owned by the Miller family and designed by Peter Brock, the illustrious automotive designer whose work was a feature at this year’s event. Stewart Wicht of Rolex Watch USA presented the winner with a Rolex Oyster Perpetual Cosmograph Daytona, with the special engraving of the Quail logo. “My cars have received many recognitions in the past, but today is a very special first – being recognized here is truly unique,” commented Peter Brock.
The Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe was the second coupe produced and the first built with bodywork by Carrozzeria Grandsport. CSX 2299 competed in nine FIA races. Besides a GT-class win in the 24 Hours of Le Mans and a victory in the Goodwood Tourist Trophy race with Dan Gurney in 1964, the car also won its class in the Daytona 2000km and the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1965.
More than $90,000 was raised at the 11th annual event to benefit the California Highway Patrol 11-99 Foundation, Naval Postgraduate School and the Rancho Cielo. Panama hats exclusively designed by Oscar de la Renta for The Quail were sold for $75 each, with proceeds benefiting Breast Cancer Assistance Group of the Monterey Peninsula.

Correct spelling is Fantuzzi. That car was never in ANY race, more of a long buried prototype looking like a race car. Claims are made that it was registed to race but not a single picture in any race. Somebody did not do their research or assumed the “owner” did not “color” it’s history to add value.
