While there are no shortage of high-caliber events during the Monterey Car Week, one element has been missing through the years: A “Sundance-esque” film festival for car enthusiasts. The inaugural Monterey Automotive Film and Arts Festival completes the picture by celebrating the automobile on screen.
Held at the historic Golden State Theatre in downtown Monterey, the Monterey Automotive Film Festival is right in the thick of the action. The restored theatre is within view of the Crown and Anchor, for example, so there’s no reason not to stop by and enjoy the film previews and trailers or stay and watch a feature-length movie.
Running August 15-17, the Monterey Automotive Film and Arts Festival features renowned classics including Le Mans as well as films that celebrate the greatest names in racing. John Fitch’s extraordinary achievements are highlighted in two films: A Gullwing At Twilight – The Bonneville Ride Of John Fitch and The Quest, a film about the search and restoration of a 1960 Le Mans class-winning #3 Corvette.
The list of films is quite long. Some interesting attractions include 32 Hours and 7 Minutes – An Outlaw Race and a preview of Where They Raced: Speed Demons In The City of Angels. Topics range from Horatio’s Drive a documentary about the first ever drive from San Francisco to New York, to 1, an action documentary of Formula One told through the voices of Jackie Stewart, Jackie Ickx, Nigel Mansell and Michael Schumacher.
Guiding attendees through the three-day event will be moderator “Fireball” Tim Roberts who is best known for designing cars and special effects for the film and TV industry. Guest speakers will be on hand to share stories and answer questions. Attendees are encouraged to browse the online schedule for showtimes and purchase tickets in advance.
