The 2012 running of the famed Mille Miglia rally took place 16-20 May in Italy on the historic roads from Brescia to Rome and back to Brescia. A field of approximately 375 cars built between 1927 and 1957 challenged each other and themselves in the modern revival.
Far more than a historic car rally, the Mille Miglia Storica is a virtual step back to the era of 1927 to 1957 when these racing cars roared across the Italian countryside and towns at the hands of such greats as Nuvolari, Marzotto, Biondetti, Caracciola and Moss. And as the pictures attest, spectators of all ages enthusiastically support and cheer the cars and drivers.
In addition to Dirk de Jager’s Mille Miglia – Report and Photos and our Mille Miglia Picture Gallery, we also offer photos from “Behind the Scenes” at the this year’s Mille Miglia that give an overview of the pre-race action, spectators and participants along the 1,000 mile route.
Correspondent Alessandro Gerelli, a veteran Mille Miglia attendee, reported that the crowds at the 2012 Mille Miglia were stronger than ever and that the quality of cars was likely the highest he has seen.

Hi – what is that stunning one-taillighted red beauty (Rego Mi-18 3385) featured in Mille Miglia 2012 – Behind the Scenes?
Hi Bill – That’s the 1940 Fiat 508 C 1100 Coupe. Really neat Italian one, isn’t it?
My wife and I (from Canyon, Texas) were at the first day of the 2012 Mille Miglia. Your photographer captured a picture of my wife in the picture 3 of 160. She is the lady in the big red hat on the right side of the picture. I took about 800 pictures that day in Brescia and in the first stop Desenzano where we spent that night. Being at the start was great but seeing my wife in the picture made it wonderful. Thanks for being on the internet so we could see it. Jerry and Nonette Robinson Canyon, Texas
