I can’t help but laugh when I hear race commentators today, talking about drivers with “long careers.”
“Veteran” drivers these days seem to include anyone who has driven in a series for five years, while the Methuselahs of racing are anyone with an uninterrupted decade under their belt. A couple of years ago, much was made of Rubens Barrichello’s retirement from Formula One. Barrichello’s Formula One career included 326 Grand Prix starts over 19 seasons. Certainly, within Formula One terms, that is a long run, but it doesn’t come close to rivaling several other professional drivers…and one in particular.
