The Legends of the Autobahn 2011 was held Friday, August 19th at the Rancho Canada Golf Club in Carmel Valley, California. The second annual all-German marque Concours saw several hundred Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and BMW entrants on the show field, making it one of the larger events of Monterey Classic Car Week.
Notable Mercedes-Benz at Legends of the Autobahn 2011 included Steve Thomas’ replica of the famous Mercedes-Benz Renn Transporter, complete with a 300SL Gullwing restored in the style of the W194, the 300 SL Roadsters and the 300Sc Roadster.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the E30 BMW M3 and there were special displays to honor that model as well as the E28 M5 and E24 M6. Other notable BMWs at the event included the Alpina B7S Turbo, several 2002 Turbos, the always-graceful E9 BMW 3.0 CS, Isettas, the 328 Hommage Concept and early 328s.
Porsche was represented well with a dozens of 911s highlighted by the 2.7 Carrera RS, multiple 356, including Speedsters, in addition to a rare 924 Turbo.
As was the case at the 2010 Legends of the Autobahn, each German car club coordinates their own respective parking corral and judging areas and conducts their own judging and awards ceremonies. There is a “Best of Show” award, People’s Choice, and other special awards. Overall Best of Show at the 2011 Legends of the Autobahn was awarded to a Mercedes-Benz 280SL.
