The World Championship for Makes was one of the several names the FIA adopted for its global sportscar championship through the years, and one of the more accurately descriptive—along with World Sportscar Championship. It was a championship that embraced the manufacturers’ envelope-advancing prototypes as well as the production-based Grand Touring machines, and together those two categories wrote significant portions of racing history.
Now, in order to represent the “golden years” of Championship of Makes sports car racing more accurately, Historic Sportscar Racing has announced that it will expand its Group 7/Championship of Makes competition category to include “the production-based sports cars of the 1970s and 1980s on slick tires.” These cars will move from their previous Group 9/IMSA Historic GT home to run alongside Group 7’s FIA Sports Prototypes of the same era, still in their respective classes, just as they did originally.
