The Goodwood Revival 2015, held 11-13 September at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England, honored the 50th anniversary of the Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe with a daily parade around the 2.4-mile track. The gathering marked the first time all six original examples of Carroll Shelby’s creation have been brought together, including the prototype.
The Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe is an American racing sports car built in 1964-65 by Shelby American Inc. for international competition. In 1965, it became the first American-built car to win the World Championship by defeating the perennial favorite Ferrari team. The six, aggressive Kamm-tailed GTs powered around the Goodwood Motor Circuit track in an evocative display that brought back memories of the car’s World Sports Car Championship winning year. All were on display at a recreation of the 1965 Sebring pits: like Goodwood itself, one of the Cobra’s seven victories that year.
The Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum’s 1964 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe was reunited with all five other Daytona Coupes. The 2015 Goodwood Revival was the first trip to Europe for the Simeone Museum’s Daytona Coupe since its final race in the 1965 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The Simeone Museum’s car is known by its chassis number, CSX2287, as well as “the prototype” since it was the first of six cars built. Designed by Peter Brock, CSX2287 was scratch built in less than 90 days and is the only example made entirely at the Shelby facility in Venice California. CSX2287 competed in eight races and at the conclusion of the 1965 season, the car was retired from competition. It made one final appearance at a Goodyear tire testing session at the Bonneville Salt Flats in November 1965 where it set 25 land speed records.
Chassis CSX2287 was briefly used on the streets of Hollywood in the late 1960s by music impresario Phil Spector, and then it disappeared for over 30 years. In 2001 the car was rediscovered and joined the collection of Dr. Frederick A. Simeone, and in 2008 it became a centerpiece of Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philadelphia.

I have always loved these cars and the small team that developed them. My interest was six cylinder Austin Healeys and I purchased my first at age 17. Following sports cars racing in the 60s, LeMans and the Daytona period resulted in my purchase of the Paul Hawkins driven works Healey 3000 that won its class in 1965 at Sebring. My next Austin Healey was the works streamlined Sprite that ran at Sebring in 1966 & 67. The purchase of this Sprite involved attending the 2000 LeMans 24 Hour race where we were part of the Historic Demonstration. Imagine my pleasure when waiting to access the circuit at the gate before Mulsanne I turned to see what vehicle was causing such a deep rumble and discovered that a Daytona had pulled up alongside. In the passenger seat I believe was Phil Remington. We then went on to be presented in front of the pit straight grandstands and then completed 3 or 4 laps. To keep up in the Sprite it was 7200rpm in 5th gear!

GFS, to their everlasting credit, was live streaming the event the whole weekend so I made it a point to watch when the Daytonas were scheduled to run. They were late, but worth the wait. What cracked me up was the fact that the announcers hardly mentioned the cars. Why? The last remaining flying Avro Vulcan bomber was supposed to do a flyover and they spotted it off in the distance early in the Daytona run. They went on and on about the bomber and the Daytonas were just a footnote to them. Also, CSX2287 was barely on camera, so it was nice to see so many photos of it in this album. It’s worth the trip to Simeone just to see it.

As I recall, the Hawkins 3000 turned in Sebring’s fastest times during the deluge. That was the first race I ever attended.
The Daytona coupes? Few cars have been designed then that are more beautiful, IMO.
I would imagine AC Cars would dispute the claim that CSX2287 was the only Daytona coupe “…made entirely at Shelby’s facility…”. Anyone know why the Willment coupe was not invited? Does it still exist?

I watched the live streaming and was totally delighted to see the Simeone Museum car on the track! Have to say it has not looked better since before it was a Bonneville!
