The Goodwood Revival 2014 was staged September 12-14 at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England. A sell-out crowd of 148,000 guests enjoyed the 16th annual historic motor race that’s the finest of its type in the world.
While seeing the staggering array of vintage race cars battle the 7-turn, 2.4-mile Circuit is undoubtedly the main draw at the Revival Meeting, it’s the little details curated by Lord March and his team that make this event the best. Since its beginning, fashion has long been an integral part of the annual historic motor racing event, with most attendees dressing in period attire from the 1940s, ‘50s and ‘60s for the occasion. Additionally, off-track recreations of Brighton Pier, Stonehenge and BMW’s 1950s Park Lane showroom combined to make the event the largest celebration of vintage culture in the world.
The 60th anniversary of the Jaguar D-Type was marked with a 30-car parade plus the Lavant Cup race exclusively for examples of the Le Mans-winning British sports car, while the Maserati 250F also turned 60 with variants of the Italian grand prix car making up two thirds of the Richmond Trophy field for front-engined F1 machinery of the late 1950s. Sir Jackie Stewart’s extraordinary career – which was catapulted into life at Goodwood in 1964 thanks to a maiden single-seater test – was marked with a 24-car parade that featured fellow motor racing greats John Surtees, Richard Attwood, Mark Webber and Arturo Merzario.
The racing cars were not the only ones to take to the track with over 100 military vehicles from the 1939-1945 conflict lapping the circuit as part of a tribute headed by Lord March. It is now 75 years since the ninth Duke of Richmond aided the war effort by making what is now the Goodwood Motor Circuit available for the nation’s use. The result was RAF Westhampnett, a Spitfire base that made a massive contribution to the eventual victory.
Therefore it is not surprising that evocative Spitfire and Hurricane displays are a regular part of any Goodwood Revival’s entertainment and it is usual for them to be joined by the Battle of Britain’s Memorial Flight’s Lancaster, but with the only other example of this great, four Merlin-engined bomber currently visiting the UK from Canada, the crowds at this year’s Revival were treated to the sight of both on all three days. As Lord March pointed out, it was to such as these and the 23 D-Day veterans present, that we owe our current freedoms.

Too wonderful and pity too far from ‘ere (Australia)
Roy, there was on cable TV here in Aus 2-3 hours of classic racing from the Goodwood Revival on the Sunday. It was LIVE on Eurosports channel. I especially enjoyed 2 x Mk I Jaguars and an Austin A40 Farina at the head of one race, the three cars dicing throughout and each had the lead at a different time! Finally the A40 won – although in a 2 race series, one of the Jags was just in front.
Not often I say this but wish many of these images were mine. The image of the Black Adder is perfect.
Dennis
as always…thanks for the great coverage and pictures.
Ooo
Oh my, how I would have loved to be there again.
Next year for sure!
I usually fast forward through most of the “At full chat” racing pictures, stopping here and there for a few. These captured the feeling and art of the event. I inspected each one and enjoyed each. Detail and people are a big part of racing for me, and I suspect most people. And none of the pictures were artificially tilted as if the photographer had one short leg!
Julien, Thank you for a gorgeous visit to Goodwood. One day I may make it in person.
LOVE IT!
