The test day for the inaugural Goodwood Members’ Meeting was held Friday 14 March 2014 at the Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England. The preparation for the 72nd Members’ Meeting testing featured a great selection of race cars being readied and drivers familiarising themselves with the famed Goodwood Circuit.
Among the more unusual cars to have been prepared especially for the 2014 Goodwood Members’ Meeting was the Lotus 11 ‘Breadvan’. The car, whose bodywork was reportedly built from a Mosquito aircraft fuel tank, is one of the more unusual-looking entries, and it will be a sight to see it compete with the Ferrari 250 ‘Breadvan’ in the Moss Trophy.Owner David Cooke said, “Well the roof hasn’t come off! In fact there’s no rattling at all. The car feels like a regular Lotus 11, but it seems to be making more speed – I can’t tell because the rev counter isn’t working right now. Perhaps we’ll need to install a higher final drive for the meeting.”
Lotus Formula 1 team member Tim Scott-Andrews arrived early to test the freshly-built Group one ‘Triplex’ Rover SD1, originally campaigned by Tim Harvey. We asked what it was like to drive. “I don’t know, really. The furthest it’s driven so far was off the trailer to the noise testing,” said Scott-Andrews.
Also competing in the Moss Trophy will be Chris Drake and Andy Prill in a 1962 Chevrolet Corvette, who arrived early for testing with the car looking and sounding wonderful. Both have a busy 72nd Members’ Meeting ahead of them with Chris driving a menacing-looking black McLaren M6B, as well as sharing the driving of the Corvette with Andy — who himself will also be ensuring the legendary ‘Rothmans’ Porsche 956 runs properly for its owner in the Low Drag Le Mans demonstration.
In complete contrast to the relatively-heavy and powerful V8 monsters will be McLaren Chief Test Driver Chris Goodwin who will drive his father Tony’s Lola Mk2 in the Threlfall cup. This remarkable little car was originally purchased by Tom Threlfall himself and was raced by Goodwin senior at Goodwood in 1964. When Chris drives it at the 2014 Goodwood Members’ Meeting it will be almost fifty years to the day since his father campaigned the same car. Fittingly, Tony was down to test the car before signing it off for Chris to race.
As if to highlight the diversity of the cars competing at the Members’ Meeting, just a short distance away from the Goodwins in a corner of the paddock was the Faberge-liveried Chevrolet Camaro, the Belga-sponsored 3.0 Capri, Mini Coopers, various Aston Martins, Lotus Cortinas, AC Cobras, GT40s, a phalanx of various Frazer Nash models, and more. Proof, as if it were needed, that the 72nd Members’ Meeting is going to be something special.

Great coverage Julien, I particularly liked your last photograph of the +4 Morgan badge, very well done. It looked cold in the morning, I´m in awe that you managed to get your “trigger finger” working… Cheers Graham
Thank you ! It is true that it was a cold morning and we were taken by surprise coming from Belgium where it felt like summer.
What are AC Cobras? COB or COX cars?
Do the McInerneys ever enter their Cobra eating TVR Griffith 400, Scottish light blue, in the above race or is the competition just not to par?
If one looks at the U-tube 2013 Oldtimers Gran Prix and see Sean or Michael driving that super fast Griffith 400 it just beats everything on the track except a E-Jaguar driver who knows how to use slower cars to block the Griffith 400. Now, that E-jaguar is not the run of the mill. It is a lightweight Jaguar and it is fast as it passes up every Corvette, Porsche 904, Aston Martin, and super fast Shelby AC Cobras. The second and third place, coupe and open top Cobras, led until that E-Jaguar passed them up.
What was funny at the beginning of the race one can see Alex …..comber looking at the rear view mirror to see if the Griffith 400 is on his tail. One more lap and the Griffith would have passed him up and won the race.
Overall, it is a great race to see. Too bad that the Griffiths of the McInerneys and Shipman/Mark Hales aren’t seen in the Goodwood races.
In the Griffith corner,
