The Tony Gaze Trophy at the 2014 Goodwood Members’ Meeting was held March 29-30 at the 2.4-mile Goodwood Motor Circuit in West Sussex, England. The race for sports and GT cars that raced before 1959 was named in honor of a man who was instrumental in the creation of Goodwood Motor Circuit, the late Tony Gaze.
In addition to his distinguished exploits as a World War 2 fighter pilot, Frederick Anthony Owen ‘Tony’ Gaze DFC was also a fine driver. An occasional driver in Grand Prix racing, he helped instigate the Goodwood Motor Circuit in 1948 after he suggested its suitability as a new track to the then Duke of Richmond.
The Tony Gaze Trophy race at the 72nd Goodwood Members’ Meeting aimed to emulate the popular ProdSport and GT races from the late 1950s. Such races were hugely popular in period, with club drivers being the lifeblood of the original Members’ Meetings. The ‘arrive and drive’ spirit of that era saw production sports cars of the sort you would expect to see en route to the circuit and then lapping furiously on track a few hours later. Icons of the era such as the Jaguar XK120, XK140, AC Ace and Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France battled with nimble, smaller capacity roadsters such as the Morgan Plus Four, Austin-Healey 100/4 and MG A 1600.
While the competitive Tony Gaze Trophy race saw the top four finishers separated by a tick over eight seconds, it was the bare aluminum AC Ace-Bristol of Andy Shepherd that finished 3.4 seconds over the Jaguar XK150 DHC of Andrew Keith-Lucas and four seconds ahead of Chris Jolly’s Aston Martin DB2/4. The Ferrari 250 GT Tour de France duo of Max Girardo and David Cooke rounded out the top five.
