Gooding & Company held its 2012 Scottsdale Auction event on January 20-21 at the Scottsdale Fashion Square Mall in Scottsdale, Arizona, resulting in $39.8 million in total sales and a 98% sales rate.

Gooding offered 118 lots for sale in Scottsdale, with top sale going to the alloy-bodied 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing that sold for a world-record $4,620,000.The Mercedes was joined by a dozen other record-breaking sales, including the 1929 Bentley 4.5 Litre Dual Cowl Sports Tourer at $2,145,000, the 1971 Maserati Ghibli 4.9 SS Spyder that sold for $880,000 and the 1930 Duesenberg Model J Disappearing-Top Convertible Coupe that brought $2,640,000.

The 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Alloy Gullwing is an matching-numbers example, one of only 29 alloy bodied models in existence. While they rarely come to market, the price paid stunned the onlookers as it soared past the pre-sale estimate of $2,500,000 to $3,000,000. The results represented the most valuable car sold during the 2012 Arizona Auction Week.

“Thirteen of our cars broke world records and our top lot, the $4.62 million sale of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Alloy Gullwing, showed us that collectors continue to seek rarity and provenance,” says David Gooding, President and founder of Gooding & Company. “I am thrilled with the overwhelming enthusiasm and increased attendance of our guests this year in Scottsdale, as well as the exuberance our new and returning bidders demonstrated.”
