The Danville Concours d’Elegance 2013 was held September 21-22 on the historic downtown streets of Danville, California. The 9th annual event included a traditional Concours, plus a Tour d’Elegance rally and Dinner d’Elegance celebration at the Blackhawk Museum.
Jim Edlund, co-chairman of the Concours, said, “2013 was our biggest event yet.” The tour sold out with 55 entries, Saturday night’s dinner sold out and the Concours sold out with 220 entries.
Best of Show at the 2013 Danville Concours was awarded to the 1965 Iso Grifo of Charles Potts. Additional award winners included Best German car presented to the Steven Lawrence’s 1959 Porsche 356A 1600; the British class went to the 1949 Triumph 2000 Roadster entered by Jim and Joanna Rogers; Alan Cavey’s 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona won Best Italian; George Beck’s 1937 Packard Super Eight 1500 Touring Sedan took home American Pre-War; the 1967 Chevrolet Corvette C2 427/435 Tri-Power of Don Westbie won American Post War and the 1976 Triumph TR7 of Richard North took the checkers for the Race Car class.
In addition to the award winners, other notable cars among the 220 entries included the 1967 Gulf Mirage-Ford M1 GT40; 1928 Bentley 4.5-Liter Le Mans (Committee’s Choice Winner); 1954 Ferrari 500 Mondial; 1967 Porsche 911S; 1956 Austin-Healey 100/4; 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing; 1937 Cord 810 Cabriolet; 1961 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale and 1954 Jaguar XK120.
The Blackhawk Museum’s 1967 Gulf Mirage-Ford M1 GT40 was last seen at this year’s Amelia Island Concours. This Mirage M1 is the first of three lightweight Mirages built by JW Automotive Engineering backed by Gulf Oil Company to contest the World Sportscar Championship, and it is the only one of the three that survived in Mirage configuration. The Blackhawk crew brought this car down the hill from the museum and onto the streets of Danville. An exhaust note that can only be described as sharp and tearing echoed off downtown Danville early Sunday morning as M1 made a few runs down Hartz Avenue. People paid attention.
The Danville d’Elegance Foundation is dedicated to supporting organizations in their pursuit of a cure for Parkinson’s disease, while raising funds to benefit the advancement of both Parkinson’s research and patient care. Derek and Alma Hill attended this year’s event, as Phil Hill was a patient of The Parkinson’s Institute, one of two recipients of the event. The other benefactor is The Michael J Fox Foundation. Since 2004, the Foundation has raised more than $1.5 Million for Parkinson’s research and patient care.
