The man who held honorary SCCA Competition License No. 1, Ohioan Chuck Dietrich, has died at the age of 88. A two-time SCCA National Champion—G Modified in 1963 with a Bobsy SR2-Ford, and Formula B in 1967 with a McLaren M4B—Dietrich began racing in 1948 with an MG TC.
In 1955 he finished 2nd in the inaugural race at Elkhart Lake’s Road America driving a Lester MG, and he became an Elva works driver in the ’50s and ’60s, contesting Formula Junior in an Elva 300-Ford and both Nationals and the USRRC pro series with an Elva Mk 7-Porsche. He also raced in the inaugural Trans-Am race at Sebring in 1966 with a Mini Cooper S.
