Bonhams staged its very first Amelia Island auction last Thursday at the Fernandina Beach Golf Club, selling nearly $14 million worth of cars with a 79 percent sell-through rate. Top sale of the auction was a rare and exquisitely preserved 1930 Cord Model L-29 Town Car with coachwork by Murphy (shown) that drew enormous interest before ultimately selling to a U.S. collector for $1,760,000.
The Cord was one of three cars to pull prices of more than $1 million, joined in that category by the ex-Lindley Bothwell and D. Cameron Peck 1908 American Underslung 50HP Roadster that brought a high bid of $1,738,000, a new world record for the model, and a 1930 Stutz DV32 Super Bearcat Convertible that sold for $1,012,000.
Several other world auction records were also established, including a 1981 BMW M1 Coupe at $605,000, a 1952 Alfa Romeo 1900C Sprint Coupe at $415,800, and a 1980 Ferrari 512 BB at $359,700. For more information and a complete list of results, please visit Bonhams.com/Amelia.
