Surjit Hermon, a 61-year-old Illinois radiologist and veteran vintage racer, was killed in an accident during a practice session for the Vintage Sports Car Drivers Association’s 23rd Annual Elkhart Lake Vintage Festival Races at Road America. Hermon apparently lost control of his Eastlake 11 exiting Turn 13 and struck a disabled car that had stopped off the racing surface. That car’s driver was treated at the track and released.
Transported by ambulance to St. Nicholas Hospital in nearby Sheboygan, Hermon was pronounced dead on arrival, with Coroner David Leffin listing the cause of death as blunt force trauma to the neck and chest. A witness to the accident reported that both yellow and white flags were being displayed to alert oncoming drivers of the situation ahead, but that Hermon’s car seemed to lose traction as it approached the scene.
