1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider sold for $8,800,000

The RM Auctions Arizona 2014 sale was held January 16-17 on the grounds of the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa in Phoenix, resulting in more than $45 million in total sales and an 85% sell-through rate. A total of ten million-dollar-plus transactions and numerous auction records were set at RM’s 15th annual Arizona sale, with bidders hailing from 20 countries around the world.

Top sale honors at the 2014 RM Auctions Arizona auction went to the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spider, chassis 1055 GT with coachwork by Scaglietti, that sold for $8,800,000, making it the most valuable car sold in Arizona auction week history. Chassis 1055 GT is the 11th of 50 long-wheelbase California Spiders.

Additional Ferrari highlights from the two-day sale include the 1963 Ferrari 250 GT/L ‘Lusso’, chassis 5215 GT, which sold for $2,447,500, setting a new record for the model at public auction; a preserved 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB, chassis 8349, which sold for $1,815,000; and a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTS, chassis 08353, which sold for $1,485,000.

Additional million-dollar-plus sales included the ex-Bob Donner and Don Wester 1961 Porsche 718 RS 61 Spyder, taking the number two spot at $2,750,000, while a 1930 Duesenberg Model J ‘Disappearing Top’ Convertible Coupe, offered for public sale for the first time since new, sold for $2,200,000.

Further notable results included the 1958 Bentley S1 Continental Coupe at $511,500, a 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL ‘Pagoda’ for a record $165,000, a 1986 Toyota Celica IMSA GTO that made $242,000 and the 1961 Bentley S2 Continental ‘Flying Spur’ that brought $297,000.

RM Auctions offered 126 automobiles for sale, with 108 finding a new owner, reflecting an 85% sales rate. Total sales volume was $45,563,450, inclusive of buyer’s premiums. The average price per car sold was $421,883.
