A celebration of the 125th anniversary of the creation of the automobile will be the central theme of the 61st annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, scheduled for August 21, 2011. It was 1886 when Karl Benz received the first patent for a gas-propelled car (the three-wheeled Benz Patent Motorwagen), and later that year Gottlieb Daimler mounted an engine on a four-wheeled vehicle, kick-starting the era of the automobile.
Consequently, “The Creations of Benz and Daimler and their successors, notable Mercedes and Mercedes-Benz,” will be featured at this year’s Concours. Also receiving special attention will be early Rolls-Royce Silver Ghosts (1907–1919), and the centennial of Stutz, America’s first sports car, as well as both the Birth of the Ferrari 250 GTO and Italian Motorcycles.
