Dana Mecum’s Original Spring Classic, the original, largest and best muscle car auction brought more than classic American muscle to the auction block at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis May 12-16, as top sellers included a mix of modern and vintage, foreign and domestic. A 65 percent sell-through rate meant 916 of the 1,404 vehicles offered sold, with total sales reaching $42,878,210.
Leading the sale was a professionally restored 1967 Shelby 427 Cobra Roadster from the Don Davis Collection that gaveled for $1,000,000. Second-highest selling price was the $775,000 paid for another of Davis’ cars, a 1971 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona Berlinetta. Ten further vehicles from the Davis Collection also sold.
The 3rd highest sale price was paid for an unrestored 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429 Fastback from the Danny Hill Collection that hammered through at $465,000, while a 2005 Ford GT from the Rick Baker Ford Collection with just 310 original miles on it went for the 4th–highest price of $380,000.
