Wayne Gardner took his customary win in the second half of the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy, riding John-Lee Pemberton’s Matchless with his usual élan. Ian Bain made the best start with a ten ’bike-length lead by the time all the riders first arrived at St. Mary’s but he soon dropped down the order once Tim Jackson and Michael Russell got into the groove.
Following the rider changes, Gardner was visibly faster than his rivals, routinely dipping below 1m 30s lap times, as Steve Brogan – having taken over from Bain – squabbled with Michael Rutter (who’d taken over from Russell), the former falling back in the closing stages. Gardner crossed the line a full 20-seconds ahead of Rutter after a millimetre perfect display of precision riding.
