The RM Auctions Monaco 2014 sale will be staged 9-10 May at Le Sporting on the Côte d’Azur in Monaco. More than 80 collector cars with an emphasis on historic competition will be featured at the single-day, biennial RM Monaco auction held the same weekend as the Monaco Historic Grand Prix.
A total of nine automobiles offered at the RM Auctions Monaco 2014 sale are estimated to sell for €1,000,000 or more. Three vehicles carry pre-sale estimates of more than €4.000.000, including the 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/C, 1956 Maserati 450S Prototype and 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series I.
The 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/C with coachwork by Scaglietti is the ninth of only twelve produced. This matching-numbers example with Ferrari Classiche certification was not sold to a race team but rather delivered new to a private owner in Milan who registered it for road use. The car didn’t see track action until 1969, when its third owner competed in the Colle San Eusebio Hill Climb. It then passed onto its fourth owner in 1973, spending the next 22 years in the Netherlands. Most recently, the car has participated in various tours and rallies including the Tour Auto (Estimate: €4.300.000 – €5.000.000).
The 1956 Maserati 450S Prototype by Fantuzzi has only three private owners since it left the factory. Chassis 3501 has been verified as the Works entry for the 1956 Mille Miglia, in which it was driven by Stirling Moss with Denis Jenkinson, and is also the prototype for the legendary 450S. Authenticated by correspondence from Maserati S.p.A., it was restored with the factory’s consultation in 1987. It is offered for sale for the first time in 33 years (Estimate: €4.000.000 – €5.500.000).
The 1959 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series I, chassis 1181 GT, is the 36th of 40 built and the final example with factory covered-headlamps. First displayed at the 1959 New York International Auto Show, it is Ferrari Classiche certified as a matching-numbers example. It was later owned by Bob Grossman, William McKelvy and Glenn Mounder, who campaigned the Cabriolet numerous times on the Colorado Grand. Chassis 1181 GT was showcased on the cover of Cavallino magazine, as the subject of a story about the Series I Cabriolet model, written by Ken Gross (Estimate: €4.000.000 – €5.000.000).
A 1974 Hesketh 308 Formula One, chassis 308-1, will also play a big role at RM’s Monaco sale. The first Hesketh Formula One car built, the example on offer is one of only three constructed in the 308 and 308 B series, and was extensively campaigned by Formula One champions James Hunt in the 1974 season and Alan Jones in the 1975 season. Made famous by Hunt’s late-race pass and ultimate victory at the 1974 Silverstone International Trophy Race, it also contested the Brand Hatch Race of Champions, and both the British and South African Grand Prix, in 1974. Following a successful historic racing career, 308-1 has recently undergone a complete and correct restoration (Estimate: €350.000 – €650.000).
Additional Formula One highlights include:
- 1989 Ferrari F1-89 Formula One, chassis 110, John Barnard’s first F1 design for Ferrari, raced in period by Gerhard Berger and fully restored by Ferrari F1 Clienti, Ferrari Classiche certified (Est. €600.000 – €900.000);
- 1955 Lancia D50A Formula One Recreation, chassis D50A-0007R, constructed utilizing an original engine and gearbox, includes full technical passports, allowing it to compete in motorsport events around the world (Est. €800.000 – €900.000); and
- 1966 Brabham-Repco BT20 Formula One, chassis F1-2-66, winner of the 1967 Grand Prix de Monaco driven by Denny Hulme, an integral part of Brabham’s back-to-back Constructor’s Championships (Est. €580.000 – €720.000).
Another notable offering at the 2014 RM Auctions Monaco sale is the 1966 Ferrari Dino 206 S Spider. One of only 18 examples produced, chassis 028 was purchased new by Eduardo Lualdi Gabardi, a wealthy Italian nobleman. Lualdi campaigned the Dino extensively in hillclimb events across Italy, reportedly winning 1st or 1st in class on 22 occasions out of 35 events he entered. In 1969, Lualdi sold the Dino back to the factory and by 1972 it had undergone a series of performance upgrades including the installation of a 246 Tasman engine, the gearbox and suspension from a 312 Ferrari Formula One racer, and a more aggressive 312P(B) style body, all modifications suggesting that Ferrari was experimenting in anticipation of the 312P. Since being obtained by its current owner in 1977, the car has been frequently shown and awarded with numerous accolades including Platinum at the FCA National Concours and Cavallino Classic. Never before offered for public sale, chassis 028 is estimated to sell for €1.500.000 – €2.000.000.

- 1958 Lister-Jaguar ‘Knobbly’ Prototype, chassis BHL EE 101, recognized as the original Knobbly prototype, it was purchased new by Briggs Cunningham and campaigned by 1958 SCCA champion Walt Hansgen (Est. €1.500.000 – €1.750.000);
- 1968 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 Daytona, chassis AR 75033 026, delivered new by Scuderia Autodelta in 1968 it was campaigned by Alfa Romeo Deutschland concessionaires team and raced in period by Nino Vaccarella, Herbert Schultze and Michael Weber (Est. €1.100.000 – €1.350.000);
- 1926 Bugatti Type 35B Grand Prix, chassis 4761, offered from single ownership for nearly 50 years, it retains many original components, including the frame, axles, crankcases and gearbox, and is a veteran of numerous rallies (Est. €800.000 – €1.000.000);
- 1989 Aston Martin AMR1 Group C Sports Prototype, chassis AMR1/04, one of only four AMR1s and likely the most correct example in existence as it retains its original carbon-fiber chassis (Est. €700.000 – €1.000.000);
- 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback Sports Saloon by Franay, chassis BC51LC, ne of only three Franay-bodied R-Type Continentals constructed in this design and the only example delivered in left-hand drive and equipped with a central manual gearshift (Est. €725.000 – €1.000.000);
- 1957 Porsche 356 A Carrera 1500 GS/GT Coupe by Reutter, chassis 58368, equipped with an original, matching-numbers Type 547/1 Carrera engine and Rudge wheels, it features a combination of Carrera GS and GT trim levels (Est. €420.000 – 520.000);
- 1958 Riva Tritone named “Via”, delivered new to H.S.H. Prince Rainier III de Monaco and Grace Kelly, one of just 26 examples built in 1958, “Via” is powered by the original pair of Chris-Craft MCL in-line, six-cylinder engines, each producing 175 horsepower (Est. €350.000 – €500.000);
- 1955 Lancia Aurelia B24S Spider America by Pinin Farina, chassis B24S-1110, presented in its original colors and equipped with the Nardi kit (Est. €750.000 – €950.000); and
- 1968 Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada Alloy, chassis 1A 30314, three owners from new, restored to concours standards (Est. €450.000 – €550.000).
The 2014 RM Monaco sale also includes a selection of automotive memorabilia linked to motorsport with a focus on Monaco. Leading this group is the 1991 Ayrton Senna F1 Race Suit worn by the Formula One legend during the 1991 race season (Est. €30.000 – €40.000). Additional memorabilia includes a 2005 Kimi Räikkönen F1 Race Helmet specially made by Steinmetz for the “Ice-Man” and worn for his win in the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix (Est. €18.000 – €22.000); a 2005 Juan Pablo Montoya F1 Race Helmet designed for Juan Pablo Montoya’s use at the 2005 Monaco Grand Prix (Est. €15.000 – €20.000); and a 2005 Tag Heuer SLR Chronograph Calibre 36, one of 100 limited edition chronographs produced by Tag Heuer (Est. €8.000 – €12.000).
