In racing, as in life, timing is everything. The Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 is a shining example of that maxim. Introduced in 1967, at the very end of the Ford GT40 era, the Tipo 33/2 was the first competition Alfa since 1940 to have a rear-mounted engine. The all- new 2-liter, 90-degree V-8 produced 270 bhp at 9600 rpm. In 1968, the street version, or Stradale, was introduced, the duo being two of the most sensuously sculpted coupes of the era. The Tipo 33/2 took 1st and 2nd in class at Daytona in ’68, and went on to 15 overall victories that year, with 14 more wins in 1969. Their dominance was short lived, however, as 1969 saw the dawning of the epic Ferrari 512-Porsche 917 era.
