A pair of historic Miller racing cars, an ex–Phil Hill Jaguar C-Type, and a rare Ferrari 225S headline the 24th RM Auctions “Sports & Classics of Monterey” event scheduled for August 13–15 at the Portola Hotel and Spa, 2 Portola Plaza, Monterey, California. The auction preview will commence August 12 from 12:00 noon–6:00 p.m., followed by full-day previews on August 13 through 15 with auction action commencing each evening.
Both Millers are from the Chuck Davis Collection, with one, from 1931, the only V-16 racecar ever built by Harry Miller, while the other is a rear-drive 91 recreating Frank Lockhart’s Muroc Lake Land Speed Record car of 1927. Both have undergone complete restorations, with the V-16 returned to its 1932 Indianapolis configuration, and are track-ready.
The fully restored 1952 Jaguar (XKC-007) comes to the block after 16 years in the private collection of Jerry and Kathy Nell. With this car, Hill scored Jaguar’s first North American triumph, in 1952’s Sheldon Cup race at Elkhart Lake. Autographed by Hill, the car retains its original engine, and throughout its competition career was never crashed.
Beyond its rich race history, XKC-007 has also enjoyed success on the show circuit, awarded a national championship in 1994 by the Jaguar Club of North America. In 2002, it was reunited with Phil Hill at Pebble Beach to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the C-Type.
The Ferrari 225S is chassis 0168ED, one of only six competition berlinettas built, as indicated by the even chassis number—reserved by Ferrari for its racers. It boasts an impressive competition history and fully documented ownership chain, culminating with its most recent owner, Donald R. Wasserman of San Francisco, whose tenure lasted nearly 38 years. With Mr. Wasserman’s passing late last year, the car has come up for sale and is sure to attract considerable interest.
Other notable consignments include: a stunning 1915 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost; an early 1909 Thomas 6-40 Flyabout; and a sleek 1967 Bizzarini 5300 GT Strada Alloy. Another highlight will be a magnificent series of pre- and postwar Ford and Mercury wood-bodied station wagons from the distinguished Nick Alexander Woodie Collection.
