Spencer Martin first came to prominence in Australia when racing a variety of cars, including his early model Holden sedan. His performances led to an invitation to join the Scuderia Veloce racing team, which was, at that time, the most professional outfit in the sport. While known for his victories in the team Ferrari LM250—including the 6-hour race at Caversham—Spencer rose to the top of Australian motor racing by winning the Gold Star in 1966 and again in 1967 driving the Scuderia Veloce Brabham BT11A-Climax FPF. Brian Caldersmith depicts these high points of Martin’s career in this watercolor painting.
