Solitude

While the famed Nürburgring circuit tends to be the one that most people associate with German motorsport, the scenic Solitude racecourse, located outside of Stuttgart, also enjoys a very long and rich motorsport tradition. First used as a hillclimb course for motorized bicycles in 1903, Solitude went on to hold its first automobile race in 1923. In the following years, Solitude hosted a variety of racing including motorcycles, sidecars, FJr., F2, sports cars and even Formula One in 1961. However, as is sadly the case with many racetracks, by 1965 local pressure forced the closure of the track, which like Spa, utilized a system of closed public roads.

This month’s featured Web site is an extensive tribute to this unique race-track. Some of the many features offered include: a photo gallery spanning the tracks 100-year history; a listing of nearly every car to have competed at Solitude with photos and results; biographies of many of the drivers who have competed; a detailed history of the track; and Flash movies highlighting the tracks heritage. While sometimes awkward to navigate, this site offers an amazing amount of interesting features and information.
