Sir Jackie Stewart’s career started in 1963, and though he no longer competes, there is no end in sight to his continuing career in the higher echelons of motorsport. Today, he still plays a major role at Ford and the Jaguar Grand Prix team, serves as President of the British Racing Drivers Club, in addition to carrying out a wide range of educational and promotional activities. In fact, Stewart is so busy that Vintage Racecar Journal’s European Editor Ed McDonough had to reschedule this interview four times before the former multiple World Champion could clear some time to sit and talk!
Stewart’s Grand Prix career spanned nine very full seasons from 1965 until 1973, with the driver’s title coming in 1969, 1971 and 1973. He drove for BRM (1965-67), and then Ken Tyrrell ran him in Matra International-entered Matras in 1968-69 and then in Tyrrells for the remainder of his career from 1970 through 1973 in the Tyrrell-Cosworths.
