On Saturday December 12, in the Main Space at the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philadelphia, the Museum will host the first in a series of Preservation Workshops, single-day symposiums focusing on the preservation efforts and long-term stewardship of a featured vehicle from the Museum’s collection. Dr. Fred Simeone will host a presentation consisting of a lecture and a photo slideshow while the car is displayed on the main stage.
The first car to be featured is the Museum’s 1964 Shelby Daytona Coupe, chassis number CSX2287. The life of CSX2287 is well documented, beginning with its build at Shelby American in 1963 and continuing all the way up through its life at the Simeone Museum to its recent appearance at the Goodwood Revival. Although the public has never seen photographs from the Museum’s preservation efforts, a collection recently rediscovered in the Museum’s library includes hundreds of amazing photos from before and after, hidden sections, rotisserie shots, individual components, close-ups of serial numbers, and exciting discoveries of previously unknown features.
Following consultation with various experts, the car underwent a mechanical restoration in early 2007 that consisted of partial disassembly and preservation of original finishes and markings. All original parts were returned to service, unless doing so would compromise safety, and the car was made to run as effectively as it did during its competition life.
