This interesting Web site is devoted to preserving historic photographs of the Cumberland Airport Sports Car races. Held from 1953–1970, the Cumberland airport, in western Maryland, hosted a variety of local and SCCA road races, on a classic “airport-style” temporary road course. On occasion, big names like Carroll Shelby, Roger Penske, Bob Holbert or Dr. Dick Thompson would show up to race, but often times the fields would be made up of rank-and-file East Coast club racers.
This site has developed into a historical archive of photography from this long-gone race venue and features a year-by-year collection of interesting black-and-white and color photography from each year’s event. Because the site encourages anyone with photos from these races to add their images, and because so many of the shots are of lesser known cars and drivers, this site is a fascinating insight into grassroots East Coast sports car racing in the ’50s and ’60s.
