John Surtees

For the 1964 U.S. Grand Prix, a political squabble led Ferrari to paint its cars in American blue-and-white and enter them through Luigi Chinetti's North American Racing Team (NART). Surtees led this race but finally placed 2nd to Graham Hill's BRM, good enough to raise himself to 2nd in points. He finished the job and became World Champion at the season finale, Mexico. Losing a child is one of the harshest agonies of life, and even people who don’t personally know John and Jane Surtees have expressed true heartache about the shocking death of young Henry Surtees.

Their 18-year-old son, a very promising driver, died July 19th in a freak racing accident. A wheel torn off a Formula 2 car ahead of his bounced straight into his head.
