Frank Gardner was the classic sportsman, excelling in swimming, rowing, surfing, and boxing before he began to race speedway bikes in the 1940s. Jaguars were his entry into 4-wheel competition, winning 23 times from 24 starts.
His motor racing exploits were as diverse as they were successful. He was a winner in Formula Junior, Formula 5000, Sports, Saloon, and Touring cars, and a works driver for Brabham, Lotus, Porsche, Ford, General Motors, and Lola. He raced both a 1216-cc Lotus Elite and a 7-liter Ford GT40 at Le Mans. A multiple winner of the British and European Touring Car Championships and British and European Saloon Car titles, he dominated Formula 5000 in 1971.
