CSRG Sonoma Season Opener 2014 – Report and Photos
John Goodman\'s Ford Cobra.
The Classic Sports Racing Group (CSRG) kicked off its 47th season at Sonoma Raceway Sears Point in Sonoma, California on April 4-6, 2014. The event featured testing on Friday, with vintage racing on the 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course on Saturday and Sunday. Each race group competed in three races each over the two days for a total of 24 races over the course of the weekend.
The 2014 CSRG season opener was held in honor of David Love, a longtime Bay Area resident and CSRG’s co-founder, who passed away in 2013. Love was instrumental in the growth of the organization, which has contributed more than $600,000 to the Sonoma chapter of Speedway Children’s Charities, the charitable arm of Sonoma Raceway, through its race weekends. He raced his Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa in over 250 events before retiring in 2009.
Notable and interesting entrants at the 2014 CSRG Sonoma Raceway historic races included the 1954 Ferrari 750 Monza Spider Scaglietti of Scott Drnek; John Goodman’s Ferrari Sparling 312P and Shelby Cobra FIA; Shadow Mk.III Can-Am of Fred Cziska; Tom Claridge’s 1965 Crossle C9S and Kurtis 500S; Jeffrey Abramson’s Cooper T53; Thor Johnson’s Lotus 17; William Jordanov’s Lola T160; Rick Carlile’s TVR Vixen SR; Don Hogue’s Lotus Europa Type 47 and the ex-Arciero Brothers 1962 Lotus 23 of Jim Roth.

We split up Dennis’ pictures into two galleries. Very nicely, and creatively, done Dennis. The resolution on your photos is stunning, congrats to you and Sports Car Digest.
Thank you Dennis for including photographs of North American racing cars such as the F J s Bourgeault, Huffaker B M C , and the sports racer Dailu Mk 11, along with the Mercury Cougar saloon car, and the Le Grand Mk 3, these are cars we never see in Europe, so your great photographs and coverage of this event have a double meaning for those of us that live in Scandinavia / Northern Europe. It is great to be alightend as to how many fine racing cars were actually manufactured in North America.
Great photography especially that bright red TVR Vixen SR. Initially, I thought it was one of Jack Griffith’s Griffith 400, however, I’ve only seen those in the Continent. Was the TVR leading the 65-67 Corvette convertible or were they lapping the TVR?
The so-called “Ferrari 312P” isn’t. The chassis and body of this car were built by Wayne Sparling in Florida in 1973 and it originally had a 312P motor, transaxle and running gear from 312P #0872, but all that original stuff has been gone from the Sparling car for many, many years. When we last saw it the suspension was Lola, the motor a modified single cam Ferrari 330 and the transaxle a Hewland. It did run at Le Mans in 1974 as a “312P” but its now a nice historic racing special.
