Recently, well known collector and conservation stalwart Fred Simeone commented, “Certain cars nowadays have become so historically important that their strenuous use threatens to destroy their originality and integrity.”
Hmm. I’m not sure how I feel about that statement. I appreciate his point. After all you wouldn’t want to damage a 100 percent original racecar that possessed significant history, as the repairs would obviously remove some of its originality. By the same token, these are racecars. They were built to go fast, not to sit static. And so much of the appreciation of that car and its accomplishments is fostered and nurtured in younger generations—those who were not alive to see it run in anger—by getting to experience that dynamic, kinetic display. I’m conflicted!
