To write this column I am taking time off from completing my contribution to a book. I need to take time off because I am facing one of the words I dread most – it is “Brooklands.”
Brooklands haunts me. As an Englishman, I am supposed to know about cricket. I am supposed to know the difference between “silly mid-on” and “silly mid-off” and where “deep gully” is. I know not of such things, and care even less.
