Recent developments in Long Island, New York, indicate that the fate of Bridgehampton Raceway may not be sealed after all.
According to Guy Frost, who heads an organization known as the Bridgehampton Racing Heritage Group (BRHG), the political leaders of the town of Southhampton may be prepared to change their position on the golf course development that had sealed the fate of Bridgehampton several years ago. Environmental impact studies have indicated that the golf course’s high usage of fertilizers and pesticides could leach into the ground water supply that serves the local community. Additionally, the State of New York has declared the racetrack site a state historical landmark, adding further momentum behind the push to preserve what is the oldest purpose-built road course in the nation.
But perhaps most encouraging of all is the fact that Don Panoz has stepped up to the plate and is interested in helping to fund a restoration of the racing facility should the town council be willing to change its position.
