I first became interested in Formula One when my husband took me to the Monaco Grand Prix in 1982—the race in which there were several lead changes in the last laps and Ricardo Patrese was surprised to learn he had won when he crossed the finish line! We have since attended well over a dozen F1 Grand Prix races at Brands Hatch, Paul Ricard, Monza, Spa Francorchamps, Imola, Estoril, Jerez and Magny-Cours. As an artist, however, there is no other race on the calendar which produces the incredible backdrop and atmosphere of Monaco to which we have since returned several times.
In 1986, Alain Prost drove to victory at Monaco in what was considered by many at the time to be one of his most perfect races to date. Prost took pole position ahead of Mansell (Williams) and Senna (Lotus) with his own McLaren teammate, Keke Rosbeg, qualifying 9th on the starting grid. Although Senna slipped past Mansell at the start, there was little the Brazilian could do to catch Prost that day. By Lap 10, Prost already held a 5-second advantage, and by lap 20 it was 10 seconds. When he crossed the finish line first, at the end of 78 laps, Prost had made it look like an effortless win and his victory gave him the points lead in a championship that would only be decided in dramatic fashion at the season finale in Adelaide.
