Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2015 – Auction Preview

The Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2015 Auction will be held January 10-18 at the WestWorld facility in Scottsdale, Arizona. Barrett-Jackson’s 44th annual Arizona Auction Week sale will feature the largest docket in its history, with more than 1,600 classics, exotics, muscle cars, hot rods, resto-mods and more set to cross the auction block.

With a record number of cars set to cross the block, Scottsdale will be our most electrifying auction to date.”

The Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale 2015 Auction will be the last chance to see the Ron Pratte Collection, including more than 140 vehicles and over 1,500 pieces of automotive memorabilia. Pratte’s collection of automobilia will be auctioned beginning Saturday, January 10, and his vehicles will sell on Tuesday, January 13, and Saturday, January 17. The headliners of the collection, including the 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 ‘Super Snake’ (Lot #2509) and the 1954 Pontiac Bonneville Special Motorama Concept Car (Lot #2500), will cross the block on Saturday, January 17. The Collection’s 1950 GM Futurliner will be auctioned off with 100 percent of the proceeds benefiting the Armed Forces Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to supporting and advocating for active-duty military personnel, National Guardsmen, Reservists, military families and veterans.

Called the Cobra to end all Cobras, the 1966 Shelby Cobra 427 ‘Super Snake’ CSX 3015 is one of two Super Snake Cobras built and the only one remaining in existence built for Carroll Shelby. CSX 3015, one of 23 427 competition roadsters built, still has its original 1965 date-coded engine block, its original headers with its original chromed side pipes that had been spray painted flat black.

Penned by Harley Earl, the famed styling director of General Motors, the 1954 Pontiac Bonneville Special Motorama Concept Car reportedly came into fruition while Earl watched world speed records being set at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Under the direction of Earl, Hommer LaGassey and Paul Gilland were directed to build two Bonneville Specials. A bronze car would debut in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf in New York and the green one in the Pan Pacific Auditorium in Los Angeles. The green model on offer in Scottsdale would later tour major dealerships around the country. The cars were showbiz and beyond production, but realistic enough for the public to identify with them and make them contenders for best-remembered Motorama cars.

• 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda, complete rotisserie restoration of an original sheet metal ‘Cuda, documented with a broadcast sheet and decoded by Galen Govier
• 2005 Ford GT, Serial #003, the lowest production number offered to the public
• 1958 Plymouth Sport Fury, Featured in the Columbia Pictures film “Christine” directed by John Carpenter and book written by Stephen King
• 1950 General Motors Futurliner Parade of Progress Tour Bus, One of 12 built by GM, self-contained display and transport vehicle created under Harley Earl’s direction, centerpiece of the “Parade of Progress” touring exhibit that complemented the GM “Motoramas” from 1940 through 1956
• 1961 Pontiac Catalina Super Duty, Ordered new by Bob Harrop as a lightweight car with aluminum bumpers, heater and radio deletes, Harrop won the 1962 Winter Nationals and the 1962 Daytona Speed week, where this car was Top Stick Eliminator

The 2015 Scottsdale sale will also feature Barrett-Jackson’s Salon vehicle lineup, including a 1949 Talbot-Lago T-26 Grand Sport Franay, 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS, 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing and 1968 Lotus 56 Turbine Indy Race Car, among others.

Jackson commented, “This select offering of breathtaking vehicles marks the fourth consecutive year of the Salon Collection at our Scottsdale auction. These incredible, timeless vehicles highlight the Barrett-Jackson heritage of great classics and amazing European sports cars.”

The Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport (Lot # 5087), chassis number 110123, is one of eight built on the same short wheelbase chassis used on the Grand Prix cars and one of only three completed by Marius Franay. The T-26 Grand Sport is powered by a race-proven six cylinder, three-carburetor engine producing nearly 200 hp. The car retains its original DOHC 4.5 liter engine and comes with a documented and detailed history, including receipts and pictures of a frame-off concours-level restoration.

A 1929 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 SS (Lot #5083) will also cross the block in Scottsdale. Only 121 total 6C 1750s were built, with just 30 designated SS, featuring a supercharger. This Alfa Romeo has recently undergone a complete restoration at Automotive Restoration in Stratford, Connecticut, Chassis 0312901 is in Concours condition and the chassis has returned to its original state. The chassis and engine are both original and in like-new condition. The Alfa still wears a handmade body dating back to the 1930s and is outfitted in black.

A 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing (Lot #5075) will also be featured among Barrett-Jackson’s 2015 Salon offerings. Completed in November 2006, Mario Sueiras, a Guatemalan automotive collector, invested more than 2,000 hours of work into restoring this vehicle after sitting untouched in storage for more than 20 years. Still powered by the original matching-numbers engine and driveline, this Gullwing is finished in Silver Grey Metallic Glasurit paint and features a blue plaid interior with fitted matching luggage.

Another Salon consignment is a 1927 Isotta Fraschini Lebaron 8A S Dual Cowl (Lot #5081). Much like their competitors Mercedes-Benz and FIAT, Isotta Fraschini derived significant development know-now from its racing endeavors. Isotta was the first automaker to fit four-wheel brakes to its production cars as standard equipment and introduced the world’s first production inline eight-cylinder engine at the Paris Salon of 1919. Complete with a freshly reupholstered interior, this 8A SS rivals the finest offerings from marques like Hispano-Suiza, Rolls-Royce or Duesenberg.

The 1968 Lotus 56 Turbine Indy Race Car on offer housed one of the first turbine engines ever used in an Indy car. A marvel of automotive engineering, motorsports icon Andy Granatelli and England’s Lotus Cars founder Colin Chapman’s iconic STP-sponsored #70 Lotus 56-3 Indy Race Car was raced by Graham Hill in the 1968 Indianapolis 500. Hill set a new track record with an average speed of 171.208 mph over four laps in qualifying. Hill pushed the turbine car to fourth place as late as the 110th lap, when a minor crash forced him out of the race. Owned for years by NASCAR legend Richard Petty, the #70 Lotus 56-3 Indy Race Car completely restored back to its 1968 race-day condition. It spent the last year on display inside the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, after Parnelli Jones drove the car during the parade laps of the 2014 Indianapolis 500.
