1966 Ferrari Dino 206 S Spider Side

The RM Auctions Monaco 2014 sale will be held 9-10 May at Le Sporting on the Côte d’Azur in Monaco. Sports and racing cars will be featured at the two-day, biennial RM Monaco auction staged the same weekend as the Monaco Historic Grand Prix.

Among the highlights of the 2014 RM Monaco auction include a 1966 Ferrari Dino 206 S Spider, which was unveiled in February 1966 and specifically designed to race in the FIA’s two-litre Group 4 class. This Dino 206 S is fitted with a 65-degree, V-6 engine that was conceived by Dino Ferrari himself. Finished in Rosso Corsa, the example on offer, chassis 028, was the 17th of 20 chassis built, and it was delivered new to Edoardo Lualdi-Gabardi, of Busto Arsizio, Italy. Lualdi-Gabardi campaigned the car in numerous hill climb events over three seasons, scoring multiple victories and class wins. In 1969, it was sold back to the factory, and in 1971, it was sent to the shop of Diena & Silingardi in Modena, where former Abarth aerodynamicist Francesco Guglielminetti adjusted the chassis to accommodate a modified surplus 312P spider body, as well as a much stronger engine. The car was then sold to noted Ferrari collectors John and Bill Gelles, of Scarsdale, New York. Since then, the car has remained in the U.S.A., where it has been frequently shown at Concours events and raced occasionally (Estimate: €1.500.000–€2.000.000).

Another 1960s Italian sports racer confirmed for RM’s Monaco sale is the 1968 Alfa Romeo Tipo 33/2 Daytona, chassis AR 75033 026. This sports prototype, featuring the 270 hp, two-litre V-8 engine, was raced in period by Vaccarella, Schultze and Weber. The car was delivered new to Scuderia Auto Delta in 1968 and was campaigned by Alfa Romeo Deutschland concessionaires team, with its first competitive outing being the 1968 Nürburgring 1000 KM, which took place on 19 May. Driven by Herbert Schultze and Nino Vaccarella, the car claimed 3rd in class and 10th overall. Later, it was raced by Herbert Schultze and Michel Weber, and then sold into new ownership in 1971. During this ownership, it has continued to be campaigned at events around the world (Estimate: €1.100.000–€1.350.000).

Another recent highlight for the upcoming RM Monaco auction is an 1989 Aston Martin AMR1 Group C Sports Prototype, chassis 004. One of only four AMR1s, 004 retains its original carbon-fibre chassis. Capable of producing 700 brake horsepower, it is one of two “Lightweight” examples driven by David Leslie, Brian Redman and Michael Roe at Spa, Donington, Nürburgring and Brands Hatch, where it secured 4th overall (Estimate: €730.000–€865.000).

Other motor cars to be offered at the 2014 RM Monaco auction include:

  • 1956 Porsche 356 A Carrera 1500 GS Speedster, chassis 82189, equipped with its original matching-numbers Type 547/1 Carrera engine and Rudge wheels (Estimate: €800.000–€950.000);
  • 1956 Lancia D50A Recreation, chassis D50A-0007, which has been accurately constructed utilising an original engine and gearbox. It also includes full technical passports, which allow it to compete in motorsport events around the world (Estimate: €800.000–€900.000);
  • 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental Fastback Sports Saloon, chassis BC51LC, featuring Franay coachwork and a centre-floor-shift manual gearbox (Estimate: €700.000–€1.000.000);
  • 1969 Lamborghini Miura P400S, chassis 4155, matching-numbers example with FIVA and ASI passports (Estimate: €480.000–€580.000);
  • 1969 Lamborghini Miura S ‘Jota’, chassis 4280, which has been converted to Jota specifications (Estimate: €450.000–€500.000); and
  • 1986 Porsche 959 Prototype, chassis WP0ZZZ93ZFS010067, fitted with its original Denloc alloy wheels and Dunlop tires, it is one of ten surviving prototypes (Estimate: €450.000–€550.000).
